Public hearing on electric street lighting in Sheboygan closed as officials debate test methods and prior results. City officials, the mayor and council aim to push for improved lighting after experts questioned the former tests and the railway company contested the findings.
The City of Sheboygan moves to secure a declaration from the Wisconsin Railroad Commission approving a municipal street lighting plant. May 19 1913 action by the Common Council authorized the Street Lighting Committee to obtain a finding of public convenience and necessity for the utility. Alderman Telgener testified on lighting quality. Commissioners will conduct investigations and tests.
The Milwaukee Lodge of Elks will preside over an initiation next Tuesday evening with many Elks from Milwaukee and Manitowoc attending. State officers are expected to attend and a banquet will follow in the club rooms. The local lodge plans a large membership drive and will take upwards of a hundred Elks to Manitosee for the state convention parade as a key event.
Police believe a suspect in the $75 diamond theft from E. H. Rummelle’s store may belong to the same group linked to the Gimbel diamond robbery in Milwaukee. Chief Dehne disseminated a description and ring details to Milwaukee and other cities. if the ring is moved, identification remains unlikely. Court calendar lists hearings for final accounts and proof of will on May 27, 1913.
HOSPITAL A C Dew a pioneer cheese man died at St Nicholas hospital Plymouth after an illness of several months. He was born January 29 1846 in Strebsboro Ohio and married Elizabeth Root in 1876. Survived by two daughters Ruth Dow Dana Estes and A C C Dow Jr and a son with sisters also living. Funeral held in Chicago with interment at Oakwoods cemetery.
Chicago death notice reports Arthur J. King aged about 63 died at his residence 6332 Kenmore Avenue. He organized the King Piano company in 1908 and led the Manufacturers Piano company of Detroit and the Muehlhauser Piano company of Cleveland. Survived by widow and two sons. He had resided in Chicago after leaving Sheboygan area seven years ago and was a member of the Sheboygan Lodge of Elks. Chicago Elks were notified.
In the resumed hostilities between Bulgaria and Greece, King Constantine of Greece and Prince Alexander left Athens for Saloniki. Separately, Capt. C. B. Hanna of the Sixteenth company coast artillery died from injuries at Ft. Moultrie after a gun explosion that killed three artillerymen and injured others. a wide investigation will be conducted.
President Pfister of the Merchant's Association sent Gov. Cox a 624.56 draft to complete flood relief funds for the sufferers. Earlier 500 had been contributed. Contributors preferred direct disbursement by the governor, placing Sheboygan among the state's largest contributors.
Rural members of the Wisconsin Assembly stirred over a leave of absence for Assemblyman Martin Battis of Oshkosh until June 1. Battis, recently pictured as favoring a “Farmer rule” and calling rural members “Alfalfa boys,” drew resentful comment. Battis was ill and went to Hot Springs, prompting the leave approval. The Assembly voted to restore the elective method for the insurance commissioner by engrossing the Hensen bill to that effect.
The Sheboygan Concert Band gains a permit from the Sheboygan Business Men's Association to sell tickets for a summer series at Born's Park. The first concert on May 30 will feature patriotic airs and sacred music, drawing a likely large crowd and supporting local summer events.
Chief Dehne announces that garage owners who loan out automobile numbers face a heavy fine under state law. The practice has spread in several cities where buyers await numbers or where numbers are lost. Madison has instructed local police to enforce the law in Sheboygan.
Tokyo reports say the emperor's temperature rose to 103.46 degrees with a 90 pulse and 30 respiration. He rests comfortably and officials say recovery now looks more hopeful than earlier. Crowds pray at the palace, temples, and shrines. Washington receives a cable from Emperor Yoshihito thanking President Wilson for the inquiry and well wishes.
New York May 23 John Anhut lawyer convicted of bribery in trying to gain release for Harry Thaw from Matteawan Hospital for the Insane was sentenced to not less than two nor more than four years in Sing Sing prison.
Washington May 23 Charles D Hilles chairman of the republican committee arrives to prepare for tomorrows national executive committee session. The conciliation committee met with Senator Cummins to discuss arguments before the executive committee others present include Senators Crawford Jones and Representatives Cramton and Rogers.
Naples reports renewed signs of activity from Mount Vesuvius during the night with continued eruption and a slight earthquake. Authorities say the charges have not yet exceeded the volcano's limits.

Boston reports detail state exhibits accusing Frederick E. Atteaux of funding a 1912 Lawrence dynamite campaign aimed at discrediting IWW leaders. John J. Breen repeats he was hired by Atteaux to plant the explosive, while William M. Wood and Dennis J. Collins face conspiracy charges. Breen’s testimony remains uncorroborated by independent sources.
