Ambitious farm bill moves ahead as amendments crack down on payments and crop scope. Debate centers on whether to exclude certain vegetables and how much pay a farm board appointee may receive. passage expected amid party lines and scheduling talks.
A two story farm home belonging to Mrs. Pleasant Brazelton, about half a mile from Highway 23 and two miles west of Sheboygan Falls, was razed by fire around 11 a.m. Firemen Salvaged furniture and saved the barn and granary. The owner lived there with her children after her husband died two years ago. no injuries were reported.
Frederick Hidde of Sheboygan high school won the Fox River Valley conference extemporaneous speaking contest at Oshkosh, with six judges naming him first and one dissenting vote. Oshkosh finished second, East third, among eight competing schools Appleton Oconto East Green Bay Marinette Manitowoc Sheboygan Oshkosh Fond du Lac.
The Masons plan a full afternoon program at the new temple on Fourth Street. Grand lodge officers will attend including Wright from Milwaukee and Graves from Madison. A 6:39 p.m. banquet follows with Gov Kohler and other dignitaries as principal speakers, plus a symbolic ceremony by Angelo Clas.

Governor Harry Byrd of Virginia will request Abingdon city officials to report on the shooting of 17 year old James Hendrick and two Emray and Henry College students by two deputy sheriffs and a city police officer. The incident prompted Byrd to call for a formal inquiry and public clarification of the events involved.
George S. Wilson, director of the District of Columbia board of welfare, lifted the order barring newspapermen from the District jail where Harry F. Sinclair is confined. The move restores access for reporters to observe conditions and proceedings related to Sinclair's confinement.
Robbers rifled slot machines and cash registers in seven Mercer businesses last night. A group of men loitering in town early evening, then disappeared by daybreak, are suspected of the thefts.
Wisconsin Governor Walter J. Kohler signed the highway commission reorganization bill creating a full-time salaried three member commission to replace the former five man per diem board. Senator Walter S. Goodland authored the measure and witnessed the signing alongside other state lawmakers and officials.
Two highway paving jobs for Sheboygan motorists were let at the Milwaukee office. One is five and a half miles of Highway 28 toward Fond du Lac with John Bloomer of Appleton winning at 130 356 62. The bid averages about 26 071 per mile, above the county’s 24 000. Harry Wilson Construction Company ranked second low at 135 134 87 for the Fond du Lac county section.
About a thousand students at San Mateo Union High School walked out in protest of the discharge of physical director and track coach George S. Reed and the resignation of coaches James E. Spalding and others. The march paraded through the business district after a pre arranged signal. Superintendent Frank Boren urged a return to class, but students replied they would go back only when the coaches do.
Two men died and two or more were believed dead when an explosion demolished the National Fireworks Company's powder mill in West Hanover Massachusetts. Several workers were seriously injured. United Press report indicates a major industrial accident with multiple fatalities and injuries.
Gov. Walter J. Kohler named Clayton F. Van Pelt of Fond du Lac as judge of the eighteenth judicial circuit to succeed A. Fowler at the state high court on April 29. Van Pelt, born 1894, UW graduate, Navy ensign, has practiced law since 1921 and serves as public administrator and on the Fond du Lac school board. Also named was Dr. W S MacFarlane of Tomahawk to the dental examiners board, succeeding W W Taggett.
A woman will plead guilty next Monday to purchasing liquor after consulting States Attorney George D. Carbury. The case, under a revised state statute, carries a $100 fine and $25 costs. Carbury says the Ambrose case, involving liquor found with her daughter, sets a nationwide precedent and challenges immunity for liquor buyers.
Coast Guardsmen detained Captain W F McDonald of the freighter Charles Donnelly after it sideswiped the fishing tug Margaret eight miles off Two Rivers Wisconsin. Andrew Kline and William St Pierre aboard the Margaret were badly burned by escaping steam.
A telephone agreement outlines a two panel time schedule for a debate in Fond du Lac on May 18 between Rev Robert Gordon and Mr C E Broughton with 30 minutes for the affirmative 40 for the negative 10 for rebuttals. A May 9 letter proposes time plans and asks for preference. A WHBL broadcast debate is set for May 20 at 7 30 pm with William Mauthe presiding at Armory E Fond du Lac.
In Madison the State Senate indefinitely postponed Senator Ben Gettlerman's measure relaxing compulsory vocational school attendance for ages 16 to 18, allowing permits from juvenile judges to excuse attendance by some. The vote was 15 to 13. The Caldwell voter-partisan bill was also tabled 18 to 10. Marquette law grads were barred from bar entry as the assembly killed the Slagg substitute 22 to 27, with reconsideration vote rejected. Assembly members lament Milwaukee absences amid session, and a three cent bounty bill on black birds drew limited opposition from Wallace Ingalls.
A five year old girl, Gertrude Wehrman, daughter of Mr and Mrs Erwin Wehrman, died after being run over by the rear wheel of a heavily loaded farm wagon driven by her father near Howards Grove on Highway 32. The accident occurred at 95 pm as the child tried to follow the departing wagon. Dr D Bassuener of Howards Grove attended but could not save her. The tragedy left a rag doll at the doorway as a mute sign of the child's earlier cheerful play.
United Press reports a chlorine gas release at the Solvay Process plant near Syracuse drove residents from Solvay and Liverpool. Fifteen workers were overcome with one in serious condition. Gas masks aided rescuers as green fumes spread across the area. Emergency crews evacuated the affected, with some treated at the plant hospital.
