August Neumann employed by Barney Grasse as driver was kicked by a horse in front of the Hingham hotel at noon today. His leg was broken in several places and splintered, and Dr Hess of Adel treated him before he was transported by automobile to the city for care.
A fighting bull in Valance, France, today shook off steel tipped darts as bandarillos pierced its shoulders and neck. One dart tore from flesh and struck a spectator, fatally wounding a young man. Moments later the bull was killed.
County Highway Commission and Gorge Shbbelohde supervise crews laying highways near Sheboygan Falls and Russell Wold Sexton place, with work lasting weeks to a month. State authorities sanction the projects and motorists are warned to plan around the roadwork. The Press notes the busy schedule in Sheboygan County and urges drivers to stay informed.
A citywide cleanup day showed strong municipal leadership and broad participation. Woman’s Club committees organized efforts, with factory districts, residential areas, and business districts all cleaned and brightened. Ash piles from winter coal were eliminated as workers, including children, joined in the effort.
Over the last two weeks a surge of petty robberies and failed attempts unsettles the city. Night watchman Charles Kohlberg observed two men near Fred Look Drug Store and later saw them jimmied into a basement window. The Sheboygan Coat Co offices were entered and desks looted though the safe remained untouched. rubber goods were taken and many small items broken in anger at the failed raid.
Washington May 1 President Wilson endured a long day of work consulting with many callers. He discussed Louis Murphy of Dubuque Iowa for collector of internal revenue in the northern district and asked Wisconsin senators La Follette and Stephenson about Joseph E Davies of Madison as commissioner of corporations. No objections were recorded.
Heavy rains drenched northern woods and steadied the blaze that spread into the village of Bovey. The entire town rushed to fight the fire as flames were finally checked.
A Kansas Southern passenger train near Kansas City was boarded by a lone bandit who robbed passengers and berths, wounding Jes e M. Short, a millionaire mine owner, in a pistol duel. Short is recovering. loot totaled about 1100 plus a 32 diamond. the robber fled amid blood trails and searches continue.
After a three mile bend through the east bottoms district a chair car full of passengers faced a bold demand to raise their hands. The robber, with the car patrolling gun, forced a line up the aisle as he kept them under cover while seeking valuables.
Sheboygan Falls Wis May 2 Hon Charles H Weisse former congressman on his return from Washington announced that everything indicated the passage of the Underwood tariff bill and the signature of President Wilson at an early date. He favors tariff revision and says enactment into law will prove satisfactory. He discusses patronage and says Iowa Minnesota and Michigan have an agreement with a board of national committee men state chairman and democratic congressmen determining candidates and petitions. The final decision rests with the national committee man who presents petitions to the president with broad sanction from the board.
President Mellen testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission that the profit from his 1904 New Haven stock sale was repaid to him to reimburse contributions to the Republican campaign fund of that year.
Russo, who exploited jail liberties and plotted escape, now wears a ball and chain for six months of hard labor. The court showed sympathy but imposed the minimum sentence. Sheriff Fischer made him a trusty, citing Russo’s honesty and mournful tale while two detectives stopped his Chicago escape plan and returned him.
Madison Wis May 2 The state fair investigating committee was appointed today as follows Assemblymen Gulickson Barron Carpenter Sauk Everett Racine Conway Wood Lentz Dodge Larsen Marinette Senators White Winnebago Weigle Milwaukee and Bichler Ozaukee One days rest out of seven for all employes except Railroad Train operators was favored by the assembly as was the Teasdale bill raising non resident tuition fee for high schools from fifty cents to 1 per week.
Grand Rapids Minn May 2 C H Dickson drove through a smoke filled lane between forest fires with eyes shut. Mrs Dear of Hibbing Minn did the same in the opposite direction. The two cars met head on mid woods, air was thrown about, but no serious injuries occurred. The wrecks were extensive.
Gerhard Kruech sues Phoenix Chair Co for 3000 in a damage suit over injuries at work on a three-saw groove cutter. He claims the lever loosened and his hand was drawn into the saw resulting in partial thumb and hand loss. The company denies danger and negligence. case heard over three days with Simon Gillen for the plaintiff and Milwaukee counsel for the defendant.
Washington on May 2 reports the United States formally recognizes the new Chinese republic. George DAffaires Williams at Peking cables that he delivered the recognition and is authorized to complete organizing the new government.
In Natchez Mississippi on May 2 a rescue steamer named Concordia struck a railroad bridge at Clay ton Louisiana and sank. A score of negro refugees were drowned during the incident with one white man also believed to have died.
