Sheboygan county voters face a Tuesday April 4 election to decide ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment repeal while selecting candidates for state and local offices. Ballot layout varies by city and county, with wet and dry groups and numbered levers for machine voting and cross marks for paper ballots. Voters will also choose justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, county judge, and state superintendent of schools along with local offices in each town.
The Senate quickly passed a bill to remove all doctor prescription limits on liquor for medicinal use. The measure, sponsored by Copeland, abolishes current restrictions and says no more liquor shall be prescribed than needed for medicinal purposes. House approval was anticipated.
William C. Roenitz 67 a prominent Sheboygan citizen and secretary of the Building and Loan association for 38 years died after a hospital operation. He was known for honesty, kindness, and aiding homeowners during economic hardship, leaving a lasting legacy in the local financial movement. Born August 8, 1865, he helped grow the organization from a small venture to a substantial institution.
Berlin reports a nationwide boycott of Jewish shops and professionals begins April 1 with municipal orders to buy from nationalist merchants. Jewish shops close, professors barred from universities, and several leaders placed under protective arrest as Nazi leaders urge collective punishment against perceived Jewish influence.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to pass federal oversight of traffic in investment securities sold across state lines. He warned against unethical practices, demanded full publicity for new issues, and shifted liability to sellers to restore public confidence while limiting government interference. He also advocated tighter controls on banks and corporate officers handling others' money.
The Wisconsin senate unanimously approved the Caldwell bill giving the Department of Agriculture and Markets power to fix milk prices in Milwaukee area with a 25 to 1 vote after a lengthy debate. An amendment by Senator Polakowski redirected any retail increases to producers, and the measure returns to the Assembly for final approval expected tomorrow.
The assembly concurred in and sent to the governor a bill reducing the state superintendent of public instruction salary from 6000 to 5000 dollars a year. Three young women were injured when an auto swerved to avoid children on Highway 23 and struck a tree east of Kohler at 8 oclock. The group aboard included Ruth Hertel Gladys Kohlhagen and Margaret Heale. They were treated at Kehjer medical building and then moved to Sheboygan Memorial hospital. Hertel suffered a dislocated jaw cuts and bruises. Kohlhagen had a deep gash over the eye and other injuries. Heale had facial wounds. Driver Heute had bruises. car was badly damaged.
An impoverished Chicago father, Joseph Frapaselli, revealed that a dead pig found in an alley was ground into sausage for a family feast. The meal sickened eleven people, killing two children and leaving several others critically ill as police investigate.
About 1,200 attended a Wisconsin legislative hearing on beer and wine regulation. The Leidiger bill and other proposals drew support from brewers and local officials, with calls to empower local governments on closing times and license fees. Executive sessions are planned to draft a substitute measure for action.
Madison Wisconsin. Walter Singler president of the Wisconsin Milk Pool says the state is safe from a milk strike until May 1. He notes the pool will call another strike if price does not rise from 78 cents per hundredweight to 1.40 dollars.
