President Roosevelt signed the Cullen Harrison bill amending the Volstead act to legalize 82 percent beer and wine. First sales allowed at 12:01 a m on Friday the seventh two weeks from tomorrow, with the signing witnessed in the cabinet room and announced via radio stations.
Politicians clashed over extending closing hours for alcohol sales with a plan to allow on premise consumption until 7 a.m. The measure faced opposition from opponents who argued it would erode temperance standards as discussions continued across committees.
The beer bill signed by President Roosevelt legalizes 3.2 per cent beer and wine with a federal tax of five dollars per barrel. Brewer license is one thousand dollars annually, wholesalers and retailers pay fifty and twenty dollars respectively. Regulation remains with states, while Hawaii Alaska and Puerto Rico are amended to permit sale. Advertising allowed. Volstead penalties retained. Sales start in fourteen states with others opening after set dates.
Wisconsin lawmakers introduce a bill to regulate sale and manufacture of beer and wine. Assemblyman Louis Leidiger chairs the excise committee and hearings will be held to ensure full consideration. Babe Ruth today signed the 1935 player contract with the New York Yankees for a salary of 52000. The deal marked a compromise between Ruth and Yankees owner Colonel Jacob Ruppert after Ruth initially sought more than 60000 and a prior offer was 50000.
Governor Schmedeman told Wisconsin cheese manufacturers and distributors he would call an early conference with governors of Minnesota Iowa Michigan and Indiana to discuss stabilizing cheese butter and milk prices. A six member cheese committee was appointed for further talks and a possible price posting on the Plymouth Exchange was discussed. Retailers were blamed for inaction as the industry seeks better returns for invested capital and production costs.
President Roosevelt’s farm relief bill cleared the House 315 to 35 after a 90 minute debate. The measure would pull poor land from production, tax farm products to aid farmers, and place a bounty on reduced cotton acreage before moving to the Senate where changes are anticipated.

Paul Holzhausen died instantly when his westbound car entered southbound tracks as a southward passenger train passed. The wreck wrapped the car around a sign post fifty feet south, with debris strewn along two hundred feet of right of way.
United States attorney plans immediate presentation of income tax evasion charges against Charles E. Mitchell, former chairman of National City Bank affiliates. Mitchell, arrested at his Fifth Avenue home, posted 10000 bail. If indicted, case to be tried swiftly before the grand jury with evidence on 1929 tax due of 657124.40.
The Milwaukee hearing on Wisconsin Telephone Co rates rules services and practices will be held in the courthouse at 10 a m on April 10. A separate hearing on Wisconsin Power and Light Co rates will take place at City Hall in Sheboygan on April 17.
Paul Holzhausen, 56, of Howards Road near Sheboygan, died when his Maxwell milk truck collided with a Chicago and North Western passenger train at the Martin Avenue crossing. The crash shattered the car along the tracks, with the chassis snagged on a sign post. Fire and police responded. Holzhausen had delivered milk to Modern Dairy and was en route home. Engineer Emil Schade and crew testified the whistle was blown and brakes applied as the crash occurred near the next crossing at Geele Avenue. The body was taken to Balihorn Funeral Temple.
President Roosevelt plans early action on farm credits and relief for small homeowners. White House sources say he will submit a farm credit bill to Congress soon, with two parts: reworking agency functions and lowering mortgage interest while extending financing terms.
