Hill Houston witnesses a Democratic National Convention brief noon session with prayer and music. Leaders plan to reconvene at 7:30 pm as debates on the first ballot for the candidate unfold. Delegates expect harmony and a united front despite intense convention maneuvering.
The Rev W H Baerenwald of St Marks English Lutheran Church Jefferson Wisconsin resigned after an investigation found he had deceived a St Paul area girl into believing he was dead. He shot his wrist in an apparent attempt to prove the death and later confessed the attempted act and his intimate relationship with the girl. He had been married five years and had used a cousin’s name in a letter announcing his death. The case prompted requests for an investigation by church and Synod officials.
Houston faced rising temperatures as the thermometer climbs toward the nineties. Forecasters warned hot sultry conditions for thousands of visitors to the Democratic convention. Cloudy skies and local thundershowers were forecast but are unlikely to cool the air.

A wrecking crew will raze the Pfister bakery building and begin framing north of it for the new two story 2000 square foot Montgomery Ward store. A. F. Kullmann and associates closed the deal in Milwaukee and will supervise the construction. More details will follow upon Mr. Kullmanns return to the city.
A special council meeting discussed Charles Pratt's request for a public meeting to resolve the withheld 66 000 dollars from last year’s highway funds. County officials say funds hold up Highway 141 north of Haven and Highway 32 paving. Action is deferred to next Monday, with a public meeting possible the following week, delaying county highway work into August.
Milwaukee postal clerk Edward L Tors tenson, 33, a Federal building employee since October, waived a preliminary hearing and was bound over for trial on charges of robbing malls. He was arrested at work last night, confessed to stealing United States treasury pension checks, and said he used letters to extort money from suspected dry law violators. The total theft amount is undetermined.
Milwaukee report of 68 year old witness Thomas J. Price collapsing from the witness chair and dying in court. Price, a realty dealer, was a witness in a civil case when he suddenly toppled and died.
An explosion at the New England Fireworks Company in North Thompsonville, Thompsonville, Conn, killed four people including three boys and two adults. The blast ripped through the main building, wreckage flew skyward, and a fire followed. The plant, small with under ten workers, consisted of one main structure and several storage shacks for explosives.
A child was crushed to death by a truck in Milwaukee-Oakley today. Driver Edward Anderson told police the boy darted into the street just ahead of the wheels.
Arctic experts believed the Farman seaplane carrying Roald Amundsen may be west of Bear Island if alive. The Michael Sats returned after an unsuccessful search 200 miles east of Bear Island. A Russian rescue steamer set an aviation base at King Kar Island for Babushkin flights to find signs of life on the polar ice.
Two Italian built seaplanes and crews prepared for a final eastward search over the Arctic for seven men carried away with the wrecked gas bag Italia May 25. Swedish meteorologist Malmgren led a party attempting to walk to land. Worsening food supplies and pessimism framed hopes of rescue.
Matt Wellash faces first degree murder charges in the poisoning of his 36 hour old infant. Judge Martin Dehos bound him for trial in the fall term of circuit court. Grand mother Edmund Ostram had confessed but recanted and implicated Wellash with purchasing poison in Green Bay. Norman Ostram, 22, allegedly buried the body in the backyard. later authorities charged him with burying a body without a permit. The case followed doubts raised by Dr. W A Sneeberger about the infant's disappearance.

Citizens and Kiel Association of Commerce criticize the stance, urging a city‑county conference to resolve the funding block.
Mrs. Hazel Glab age 28 and her 35 year old niece Wiss Ethel Keyser were jailed in Oklahoma City on murder charges after the shooting death of John T Glab a wealthy retired Chicago druggist. Today the district attorney moved for their release due to lack of evidence.
A carload of pulpwood from Canada to Green Bay was found to contain 8 and 5 cases of Scotch and Canadian whiskey when inspected by U.S. customs officials. The whiskey is believed to have been smuggled into the car after leaving the Soo Pulp and Paper company plant.
Justice Frederick L Sfiddony adjourned for a summer recess as Robert W. Stewart pleads not guilty to three counts of perjury. Stewart, released on $5,000 bond, arrived from New York to face charges tied to his Senate Oil Committee testimony and the Liberty bond profits of Continental Trading.
