A Milwaukee bound interurban was struck and overturned by a truck near Plymouth at 6 45. The driver died in flames. another rider suffered serious injuries and a coroner ordered an inquest once the driver recovers. Police and officials attended the scene as flames scorched the cab.
Funds sought to aid fifty undernourished children for a summer outing and recovery. The appeal notes prior donors and company contributions from Kohler, Hayssen, Reiss Coal, and the Sheboygan Press among others. Local officials Alderman Marold and Willam Marold are listed among contributors as the drive continues.
Eleven people die in weekend railroad and auto crashes and a drowning in Wisconsin. Victims include Andrew Dergus and W Barse in Ashland and Milwaukee. Henry Sanhuber and John Adams among others. Inquests planned as authorities probe hit and run causes, a car train crash, drownings, and a west side Milwaukee wreck.
Hunters and other interested persons are invited to meet in the Senior High school auditorium at 8 pm Thursday to discuss open seasons and other conservation matters. The meeting is called by Dr R C Meyer Plymouth chair man of the county advisory game committee. Members include Elmer Zemnemann and Lyn White with alternates Dr L H Te Selle and Herman Loeaing.
Charles A. Hull aged 74 uncle of Ray Hill of Plymouth fell from the top of the stairs on the first floor at the Snack hotel to the basement at 8 o clock Sunday night. He was taken to Plymouth hospital in unconscious condition with a severe gash above his right eye and possible skull fracture. He remained unconscious at noon today. Details of how the accident happened were unavailable.
Ashland editor John B. Chapple, running as the Republican nominee for U S senator, declares a five dollar contribution limit. He denounces Milwaukee big shots attempting to trade money for votes and vows allegiance to the people of Wisconsin and to his conscience guiding every decision.
Upper Lakes moderate northwest winds, generally easing by night and Tuesday, with conditions reflecting a calming trend after today. Seaborne travel may be affected by shifting wind directions and light chop on exposed shores as winds taper.
The Progressive Party, formed from the La Follette wing of the GOP, was certified by Secretary of State Theodore Dammann after petitions totaling about 120 000 signatures from 24 counties were filed to create a separate party ticket for the September primary. Officials expect up to 140 000 signers.
At Peoria Country Club Illinois Lighthorse Harry Cooper Chicago rallied from four strokes behind after nine holes to tie Denver pro Laffoon 274 274 after 72 holes. An 18 hole playoff was scheduled with Cooper carding 67 in the final and matching Laffoon’s 67.
The Senate adopted the conference report on the Frasier Lemke farm bankruptcy relief bill permitting a six year moratorium refinancing for insolvent farmers. A large bloc signaled opposition to adjournment without voting on the Dill Crosner railway labor dispute bill. The House approved the conference report on the farm relief measure as congress sped toward adjournment with an emergency appropriations bill awaiting the president. Huey Long forced attention with a filibuster before Senate leaders agreed to a farm relief vote. The adjournment push included agreement to withdraw a disputed bank bill.
A Jamestown crowd watching firefighting efforts witnessed a series of blasts when three 20,000 gallon gasoline tanks exploded near Richfield Oil. Between 12 and 20 people were killed and 40 to 60 injured, with firefighters among the casualties. The cause appeared to be an electric spark igniting the tanks near Bemus Point road. Ambulances were summoned and help sought from nearby communities as the city faced a major emergency.
