The unit, about 60 percent from Detroit, faced fierce guerrilla fighting against Bolsheviks, often outnumbered ten to one. The 339th guarded a 300 mile front within a 950 mile Archangel radius, sustaining 200 killed and 400 wounded. Wounded were sometimes carried 250 miles on pony sleds.

Private Theodore Scherer known as Ted Scherer, of 528 N Highth Street, returned to Sheboygan after being mustered out at Camp Grant. He left the U S September 8 and went through England and France with Company C 318th Infantry, 80th Division, sustaining a machine gun wound in the upper right leg November 4. He spent time in hospital until January 15, arrived in the U S May 27, and after Camp Lee and Camp Grant, he was discharged. He reports no lasting ill effects and is glad to be back in Sheboygan.

William Schrage, 67, prominent Sheboygan businessman, died today at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester Minnesota. Schrage, and daughter Jennie. He was longtime Phoenix Chair officer and formerly with Blackstock & Schrage drug firm.
