Report from Chateau Thierry describes American Marines clearing Belleau Wood, repelling a German attack at dawn and claiming prisoners. Commanders praised artillery support and disciplined advance while noting enemy breakdowns and uncertain food for captured troops.
Allied fronts from Montdidier to the Oise see heavy fighting with French forces counterattacking and holding key positions. American troops seize Belleau Wood and take about 300 prisoners as French gains east of Mery widen the line toward Le Fresnoy. German counter moves press along the Marne and Oise sectors.
Amsterdam June 12 Associated Press Gen von Stein German war minister declared the entente suffered one of its gravest defeats at the Chemin des Dames front on May 27. He claimed the so called Foch reserve army no longer exists and noted American troops appeared on the Marne front as German advances halted. He also cited large German captures of Allied ammunition and material and said British stores were taken.
A large fire destroyed junk shop and storage buildings owned by A. Smutkin at N Fifteenth St and Geele Ave, with losses around 6000 dollars. No insurance covered the structures, flames fed by tar paper and rubbished goods. Firefighters battled for hours as additional fires sparked among piles of rags and debris.
Rev. Pal E. Hinkamp pastor of First Presbyterian Church has received a call to the professorship of bible study and philosophy of Hope College Grand Rapids Michigan. He is Hope College Class of 1907 graduate and has not decided on acceptance or rejection of the call.
Washington, June 12. Under new provost marshal regulations married men with self supporting wives and those whose wives are not dependent will be placed in class one. Many now in class one will be moved to deferred or limited service. The work or fight order, reclassification, and new rules will align with draft shifts to nonessential industries.
The Reiss Coal Co and local steamer crews, including Wm. A. Reias and others, subscribe over ten thousand dollars to the War Chest while city officials and fire department staff reach 100 percent. A patriotic meeting in Hingham enthused 200+ attendees as Rev Dykhuisen and A. Pauly urged Over the Top pledges. Details of standings show varied company responses, with Crocker Chair Co. leading Group No. 1 at 98 percent and National Bar & Specialty Co. at 100 percent.
Ferdinand Jankow, 63, who lived at 104 N Highth Street and previously ran a grocery on N Seventh and Center, was found dead at 8 AM after a five day illness. He worked at the docks for 35 years and had earlier been a businessman with ties to the wheat trade. Coroner and police investigated.
Workers at Vollrath Company heard a wartime address by Luther Wishard of the Emergency Fleet Corporation about Allied and American resolve to win the war. Wishard recounted German atrocities, urged production speedups, and contrasted Kaiser-led aggression with impending peace led by Allied leaders.
Two Italian torpedo boats defeated an Austrian battle squadron off the Dalmatian coast and sank two of Austria's largest dreadnoughts. They returned to base safely after a pursuit by Austrian destroyers, and the action adds to prior Italian s successes against Austrian ships within weeks.
