Reports from Central America describe a massive hurricane sweeping through Honduras and El Salvador, with towns like Ocotepque alleged wiped out and hundreds drowned. Gulf coastal warnings rise as the storm nears Mexico and Texas, prompting disaster relief talks and airborne aid plans.
The island home of Samuel Insull Jr near Mundelein was looted during Dr Maynard Hutchins absence. Insull Sr described the camp as small with few personal items. Lake County sheriff reports all furnishings taken. Items moved by rowboat and truck with marks on shore.
Jean Crompton, 21, a companion of gangster Tommy Carroll, was convicted of violating probation terms and ordered to serve a year and a day in federal prison. Judge Patrick T. Stone noted the probation barred associating with fugitives and Carroll. Crompton admitted meeting Carroll after returning to Chicago on probation and said she would have a baby.
Congress enters final days of the session with a heavy backlog. The Senate moves on the silver bill with votes expected today and faces the 1.272 billion deficiency appropriation bill amid debate. Tugwell nomination and housing bill follow as labor leaders urge Congress to stay in session for an adequate relief and work program.

The Tugwell confirmation hearing devolved into a partisan melee as senators shouted and clashed over speeches and interruptions. Tugwell defended his fitness and opposed Soviet style planning, while senators Wheeler Byrd and Smith traded volleys about political rhetoric and constitutional government. A big American Air Line transport plane vanishing en route Newark to Chicago was found burning wreckage in the Catskill Mountains. All seven aboard are dead, including pilot Clyde Holbrook 38 La Grange and co-pilot John Barron 33 Chicago, with stewardess Ada Huckeby 28 of Henshaw Kentucky and Harry Pinsley of Great Neck New York.
The Sheboygan Press will receive the Francis Wayland Ayer award at a Philadelphia banquet this Thursday evening. The paper earned first honorable mention in a nationwide contest among 372 dailies in the 10,000 to 50,000 circulation class. Judges cited typography, display values, press work, legibility, and appearance.
