The city invites bids for furnishing labor and materials on grading and curb work along Superior Avenue and 4th Street. Bidders must deposit $800 to $900 in certified funds, payable to the City, with plans on file in the Public Works office. Bids due by June 16, 1915, with contract awarded to the lowest responsible bidder following plan approval.
A communication from the Eastern Wisconsin Electric Co to City Attorney D. T. Phalen was laid before the Common Council. It discusses cost sharing for paving between the rails on North Fifteenth Street, proposes deferred payment with 6 percent interest, and notes the council’s prior stance to withhold payment until the matter is clarified. The report details track rebuilding costs, city and company contributions, and a plan to seek court guidance from the Railroad Commission on the surface paving charge. A later meeting with the Finance committee yielded a concession to pay half of item B over one year.
Wathsiders hold a quarterly meeting last evening at Turner Hall. The group discussed Fourth of July celebrations, city improvements, and sidewalk issues on N Twentieth Street. United Press reports Madison and Springfield actions show both houses approving the federal woman suffrage amendment. Wisconsin senate and assembly ratified by 24 to 1 and 54 to 2 respectively. Illinois senate concurred 45 to 1 and assembly 132 to 3 with final passage of the joint resolution.
Washington June 10 The senate foreign relations committee plans to subpoena six New York financiers to question them about a treaty leak as the peace treaty text is laid before the nation. Debates intensified partisan bitterness as records at the government printing office were broken in printing the treaty. Senator Knox offered a resolution urging the treaty to allow future separate consideration by the people on any league of nations.
The Associated Press reports Washington on June 10 granted a further thirty day extension to July 15 for partnerships and corporations with fiscal year ends January 31 February 28 March 31 or April 30 to file tax returns. The extension does not delay payment of taxes or installments.
United Press report flags Hiram Johnson of California as the progressive choice for the 1920 Republican nomination. Senators Borah and Kenyon announce allied support from senate progressives and liberal groups, detailing a strategy to push Johnson in primaries and showcase a platform opposing entangling alliances, foreign troop deployment, and favoring civil liberties and worker cooperation. Johnson declines further comment.
Judge Meyer presided as Louis Skibben faced an attempted assault charge from Wm. Columbatto amid a bitter tannery strike. Witnesses differed on whether force was used while Skibben argued peaceful picketing. The judge found Skibben not guilty and ordered costs to the plaintiff. Separate incidents saw Slavonian Joe Godlab fined for interfering with workers, and striker Jon Stecknon fined for a technical assault at the tannery area.
Two hundred delegates attend the opening of the Eagles annual convention in Appleton Wisconsin. After routine business the treasurer reports $3174 on hand. A lodge growth report shows 56 lodges in Wisconsin.
More than 2,000,000 dollars worth of surplus leather bought for war needs was sold by the government at public auction here yesterday and the stock valued at 4,000,000 dollars will be disposed of in the continuing sale. House moves to speed railroad appropriation after laying aside army bill.
Associated Press reports in Washington that U S schools face a serious problem due to a lack of teachers. Commissioner B P Claxton told Congress that an additional 200000 dollars is needed to continue the services of his parent to address the shortage.
Private Walter Scheib twenty four year old son of Mrs Edward Scheib Franklin died at Camp Grant at 1 PM Saturday after an operation. Enlisted November 19 1917 at Milwaukee in the Quartermaster's Department and overseas for a year. He saw battles and was wounded in the right leg. Transferred to the US base hospital then to Camp Grant where the operation proved fatal six weeks ago. Born in Town of Herman he resided in Franklin the past four years. Survived by his mother four sisters Ada Esther Lydia and Dillian and four brothers Hans Elmer Edward Palmer. Father died August 4 1918. Remains arrived this morning. Funeral at 2 PM Wednesday at the family residence with Rev Helm of Schwartzwald church officiating. Interment in cemetery near Schwartzwald church.
United Press reports in Laredo on June 10 that sixty people were killed and many wounded in election riots in Monterey Mexico with unconfirmed advices. Separate dispatches indicate one man killed and three wounded during Sunday gubernatorial election disturbances in Nuevo Leon. Villa forces reportedly occupied Guadalupe opposite Fabens Texas, with Carranza troops being moved toward Juarez amid fighting.
Dispatch from Rio Janeiro reports Bahia, Brazil, main port without bread, milk, or meat for three days as general strike cripples telegraph, telephone, and lighting services. Argentine consul-general notes Brazilian government taking strict measures to contain the situation.
Berlin reports say War Minister Noske strengthens guards and increases pay to deter a potential coup amid political flux after World War I. Officials consider resignations or reorganization, with tensions over peace treaty concessions. Berlin’s future cabinet stability remains uncertain as discussions shift to Weimar assembly in Weimar.
Allied commissions present German counter proposals to the Big Four in Paris. Peter Raux, recently convicted of killing William Anderson in Rice Lake, was sentenced to fifteen years in Waupun. He threw Anderson from a second story porch while intoxicated, causing instant death.
United Press Star reports Hungarian Soviet troops push Czech forces on the Tiaza j and Haag river fronts. Captures include Satoratja and Nihelz with Kishan officially denied. Budapest notes the city nearly surrounded as French and Sengalese troops rush to aid the Slavs.
