The Associated Press reports French and Allied forces repelled German assaults on June 9 10 along Montdidier Noyon and Chateau Thierry fronts. United Press dispatch from Stockholm reports a growing counter revolutionary mood in Russia. Bolsheviks are “dying their last days” unless overthrown by democratic parties, with Ukraine’s Skoropadsky and others restoring old regimes in several regions. Protests mount as workers organize in Petrograd and threaten a general strike to end civil war and reverse Brest-Litovsk.
Sheriff George Goodell recounts a dramatic escape by 250 pound prisoner Joseph Michalinek from the county jail. The man seized the dinner process, toppled the sheriff down stairs, and fled as deputies and a pursuing dog aided by a fleeing motorist and car. Michalinek was captured later after leaping onto a streetcar and was carried back to custody.
Commissioner Luther D Wishard, a direct appointee of President Wilson, has returned from the American front in France and will address The Volfrath Co. employees under the United States Shipping Board at 5 o clock Tuesday afternoon. He speaks from actual facts gleaned at the front and is expected to draw keen interest.
The North Side Improvement Association will hold a regular monthly meeting tonight in Turner hall to discuss plans for a forthcoming gigantic Fourth of July celebration. Members are urged to attend.
An automobile owned by Henry Timmer of Waldo collided with another vehicle Sunday afternoon on the Lower Falls road while both were eastbound to Sheboygan. Timmer attempted to pass, the other car struck a telephone pole, bending fenders and causing other damage. No occupants were hurt.
A large attendance marked the Mission Festival services Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran church. Rev. Charles Bisnfeldt of River Grove, Wis., national director of Lutheran chaplain work among the army and navy, delivered an inspiring address about religious work in cantonments and on ships. Rev. O Schmidt of Howards Grove preached on mission work. The festival was one of the most successful in the church history with a large collection for missions.
Mrs. Herman A Meyer nee Louiss Brehm aged 66 died Sunday morning at the old homestead in Wilson. Born in Germany October 28 1851 she came to this country at age six. She married Gottfried Plader in 1886 and Herman A Meyer in 1883. survivors include six sons four daughters and one brother. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm from the home Rev J Oesch officiating with interment in Old Finder's Host Cemetery.
Lovers of pipe organ music are invited to attend a grand recital Tuesday evening at Holy Name Church. Dr. Lewis Browne of St. Patrick's Chicago will perform with Prof. Zohlen assisting. No admission fee, but a voluntary collection will be taken. Browne is nationally renowned and will present classical numbers for a rare musical treat. The church is expected to be packed.
Associated Press reports a German U boat remains active off the U S coast. Captain J MacKenzie and sixteen crew from the steamship Pinar del Rio, sunk June 6 near Maryland, were rescued by a Norwegian ship after escaping in an ice boat about 70 miles off New Jersey. All crew accounted for. chief mate and fifteen men landed at a life saving station on the northern Carolina coast. The Pinar del Rio, 2564 gross tons, built in 1895 in South Shields, was bought by an American firm and placed on American register, likely engaged in coastal or West Indian trade.
Beginning Wednesday evening the Oostburs Corner p Band will present a weekly series of Wednesday concerts in the village. The program will feature local musicians and start at dusk each week for residents and visitors.
Lewis Delaware June 10 reports a sugar ship torpedoed and sunk at 10 a m today off the Virginia coast per a pilot. Newport News Anglesea and nearby Jersey shore also report heavy explosions and firing at sea this afternoon as J boats operate in the area.
