Deadly blast in Wilkes-Barre tunnel kills and maims hundreds

A Baltimore No 2 mine derailment in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, caused by a trolley wire igniting blasting powder, kills or maims up to 100 miners. Victims saturated with flames and gas flood the tunnel, as ambulances rush to the scene and families search for loved ones.

Death Claims Casper Schieble of This City

Casper Schieble aged 69, a pioneer resident, died at his home 1316 East Eighth Street at four this morning after a long illness. Born in Neuensorf Switzerland on October 2846, he came to this country in 1852 with his parents. He worked on a farm, later learned the carpenter trade, and married Anna Acker on September 12 1879. Survived by seven children, with one son serving in Russia. Funeral Monday at Holy Name Church with burial in Northside Catholic Cemetery. He was widely esteemed as a devoted husband and father.

Alvin York to wed Grace Williams in Pall Mall

Sgt Alvin York, famed for single handedly capturing 132 Germans, has been captured and will marry his longtime sweetheart Grace Williams. The ceremony will be held Saturday in Pall Mall, conducted by Governor A H Roberts of Tennessee.

Wisconsin Registry of Deed Association elects officers

Edwin Koellmer of Sheboygan was elected president of the Wisconsin State Register of Deed Association at its session in Green Bay. Frank Smith of Green Bay was re-elected secretary and treasurer. The next convention will be held in Sheboygan. Dorothy Jefferson reports a Chicago paper program placing a woman as copy writer in an advertising agency for the first time in its copy department.

United Press reports at Atlantic City June 9 a Labor Federation convention will push measures to purge anarchists and Bolshevik elements. Secretary Morisco outlined warnings against radical influence and urged orderly strikes while backing immigration law steps tied to recent bomb plots. Will of William Risse Is Set Aside by County Judge

The will of William Risse, died April 18, 1919, was set aside by County Judge Pal Krez. The estate, a Sherman hardware store and a small real estate piece valued at $6,000, would have passed to widow Ella Risse for life with remainder to daughter Clara. The guardianship contest argued the testator lacked understanding when signing due to pain. probate was denied.

Aro Wolf Returns Home After Eight Months Overseas

Aro Wolf, son of Wm Wolf of Sheboygan Falls, arrived back from eight months in military service overseas. He served on the firing line before moving to the medical department due to prior druggist experience. After brief rest, he will rejoin Owl Drug Co. in Chicago and soon open a Minneapolis branch. Wolf previously managed North Side Drug Co. on Lincoln Ave. before the war.
