About eighteen hundred attended the Sheboygan Concert Band concert at Born's Park the first in a summer series. The uniformed band played a rich program including Spirit of Independence Overture Princess of India and The Star Spangled Banner. Between intermissions Elks sold tickets for a Henderson touring car won by Charles Moses. Washington reports a tariff debate where free lists for cattle wheat meats and flour are favored with wool and sugar likely unchanged. The Democratic caucus eyes further plans as Simmons notes potential free listing after Wilson talk.
City officials discuss petitions for hospital recognition and a sanitarium, delay in city hall construction, and a widened city committee. Mayors and aldermen debate viaduct plans, pay bills, and bridge projects while ordering new street work and crosswalks on S 15th to S 17th streets.
Karl Happe a 52 year old farmer living near Kiel was found dead yesterday morning from a self inflicted throat cutting. He formerly resided at Northern Hospital and was once treated there as an inmate. He leaves two wives and two sons.
Washington June 3 Richard L Merceff of Lincoln Neb editor of the Commoner was selected by President Wilson to be civil governor of the Panama Canal zone This was announced by Secretary Garrison after Secretary Bryan and Daniels were conferring with the president.
Charles F Moses owns a fine Henderson touring car presented last evening by the Elks. During the concert a drawing selected winners. Miss Ida Roenitz drew early numbers and declined to proceed as Moses was a relative. A Hebrew girl drew a remaining number and Holman quipped Moses wins, a joke that proved prophetic. Moses insists there is no ill will in the remark.
In Tokio on June 3, a Japanese foreign minister stated that no legal action related to California alien land ownership legislation can be started until the measure goes into force at the end of August. He added that negotiations between Tokyo and Washington would continue in the interim.
Herman Coppes, a 14 year old state ward, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Circuit Judge C F Irwin in Geneva after pleading guilty to the April 14 killings of Mrs Manny Sleep and her two children. The case set a Kane county record for rapid justice, with witnesses heard before sentencing. Coppes confessed after bodies were found and stated that a voice told him to shoot. He was on parole from St Charles school for boys.
George A Zinn and assistants of the Government Corps of Engineers will attend a public hearing at 2 o clock in the council chamber to review the proposed New Jersey Avenue bridge. Plans are on file in the Board of Public Works office and will be displayed at the hearing open to the public. The hearing follows government rules for bridges over navigable streams to approve plans and address complaints if any.
Dr Otto Schmidt told Cologne Medical Society that cancer is contagious and can be healed, presenting findings from his investigation into cancer origins and treatments. The announcement followed yesterday's meeting and highlights potential contagious aspects and hopeful cures.
