Thomas M. Blackstock Dies, Sheboygan Leader and Phoenix Chair Founder

Thomas M. Blackstock head of the Phoenix Chair Company and former Sheboygan mayor died at his home at 6:15 PM after weeks of illness. A self made immigrant from Ireland born January 12, 1833, he helped found the chair firm, served in politics, banked on local progress, and fostered veterans' causes. He organized the Sheboygan Mutual Loan and Building Association in 1885 and helped establish St Nicholas Hospital and the soldiers' monument. Funeral services are set for Monday at 10 AM.

The death of Hon Thomas Blackstock is mourned by residents statewide. He rose from laborer to clerk druggist and manufacturer, serving as mayor and a legislator. His influence inspired youths and his public service drew out the best in him. He has closed his earthly labors but his good influence endures.

Mrs Will Guttmann 41 wife of Manitowoc resident died yesterday after a five month illness pneumonia in fall. She known as Wanda Rhode locally and loved by many. Survived by husband daughter father two brothers four sisters. Funeral Monday at 10 am from residence.

Palte Child Sophia Dies After Brief Illness

Sophia Palte, four, daughter of Mr and Mrs David Palte of 1322 North Twelfth Street, died yesterday at home after a brief illness. Funeral services are set for tomorrow afternoon with interment at Lutheran cemetery.

Fire destroys Dewey hotel in Omaha. many dead

A blaze at the Dewey hotel in Omaha early this morning left 20 to possibly 75 people dead. The fire trapped guests on the tower floor. stairways were blocked by flames and escapes were to windows. Fire Chief Salter put deaths at around forty, with five known.

C Reiss Coal buys docks at Waukegan from Western Dock

Reports state the C Reiss Coal Co has purchased the Western Coal and Dock Co docks at Waukegan Illinois and will take possession March 1. Western’s H N Taylor and J B Cavanaugh led the firm, which dissolves. the docks enable transport for large lake vessels, expanding C Reiss’s Chicago area reach. Omaha fire update says gas explosion killed fifteen, with twenty five of sixty guests accounted for. Izzie Steiss, a newsboy, helped evacuate guests before dying. loss estimated at 250000.
