Fred Mayo alias Charles oct bamnsele and accomplices planned to abduct Lt Php Adler from a Davenport hotel in a large trunk. Adler was assaulted and robbed as Mayo and associates aimed to hold him for 540000. Mayo feared the electric chair if convicted. Mrs Minnie Lacy testified, linking Mayo to the scheme and the trunk discovery at a Chicago hotel.

Richard U Riley was convicted of second degree murder in the August 7 1932 attempted robbery at the Delta resort in Portage Wisconsin and sentenced to 14 to 20 years. Judge Van Pelt denied a new trial after a six hour deliberation by an 11 to 1 jury. Riley claimed nerves fired the shot as Grippando’s pistol discharged. Testimony showed Grippando White and Harper were Chicago suspects. Riley remained reluctant and fled west after the holdup. He later surrendered in Kansas City saying he was tired of dodging the law.
