Three of five Ohio penitentiary escapees were seized within hours. Pat McDermott and Mike Jacko, both serving life terms, and gunman Don RFR member McDermott, were cornered in a power house tower north of Columbus by Franklin County deputies J. S. Crumley and Charles Williams, with Joe Rosso later captured near a farm. Conditions included exposure to cold as the manhunt continued.

In Zagreb four self confessed murderers were hanged publicly. One man placed the rope and sprung the trap himself after the executioner faltered. The others faced death stoically though one sang hymns before violence surged.

United Press reports at least seven dead and about 90 injured in three crashes. A derailed workers’ train near Puget Sound killed two and injured 70. A freight derailment near Falconbridge, Ontario killed two and injured one. Seventeen passengers were hospitalized after an electric train collision in Rochester New York. A Hudson tube subway fire in New York affected hundreds, with about 200 hospitalized.
A miners special train derailed near Peoria at 2 a m causing a 24 foot embankment plunge. Five men are confirmed dead: William Brown, Lester Jones, Cecil Walker, George Wilkinson, Charles Luthy. Upwards of 70 injured filled Peoria hospitals as wrecking crews fought fires and searched the wreckage. Fire crews reached the scene over an hour after the crash due to no local phones, amid temperatures six degrees below zero. Rail officials blame spread rails from extreme cold.
