Kansas City police officer Irwin Stephens shot and killed gangster Lee Roberts today during a questioning over a downtown bomb explosion at the World In Motion theatre. Roberts fired twice before Stephens returned fire. Roberts had been identified as the suspect in an earlier attempted holdup and gunfire incident. The theatre frontage was wrecked but no bystanders were present.
In Coshocton a 65 year old grandmother, Clara McCurdy, was acquitted of first degree murder in the arsenic poisoning case of her elderly husband William Allison McCurdy after Judge James Glenn directed the jury to return a not guilty verdict. The defense cited lack of evidence amid threats to prosecutor C O Turner and renewed testimony on alleged financial motive.
United Press dispatch describes Robert Reidt and followers in East Patchogue planning a seven day ascent to San Diego on a cloud. Hollywood and St Paul branches report seclusion and denials of doomsday certainty amid Bowen prophecies and past misdates.
Moe Thurman, tied to pyramided loans over ten years causing losses exceeding $2 million, was sentenced to five to ten years in Sing Sing on a guilty plea to second degree forgery. Judge Kelley urged deportation to Russia after completion of the sentence.

Milwaukee amateur athlete Sonny Hopp received a year in the House of Correction from Judge James Wickham after a jury found him guilty of fourth degree manslaughter in the death of Marjorie Thomas of Sheboygan. The March 6 crash occurred as she rode with Hopp in a car that struck a concrete pole. prosecutors said intoxication, while the defense argued slick pavement caused the skid. The verdict followed hours of juror deliberation and carried a recommendation of probation.
John G. Thomas aged 70 longtime Northwestern manager for the Grinnell sprinkler firm died in Chicago after a brief illness. Survivors include Mrs. Phillip H. Porter of Madison Wisconsin.

Fond du Lac reports Sheboygan county bowlers adding honors at Fond du Lac. Ray Mihm of Kohler placed fourth in singles with 651 on 244 222 185 and 1775 all events. Steindl 639, Reichert 204, Mueller 612. In doubles J Pahle and J Raffelson led Sheboygan with 1156, Kohlhagen and Erdman 1137, Mihm 1127. Competition concludes tonight with singles and doubles before an 8:30 pm departure by special train.
The case against 71 year old Alsa Thompson in Los Angeles was dropped by the district attorney. The child was turned over to officers for correction after a confession of poisonings, judged mental illness but not insanity. Judge Walter Gates ordered private home placement for the child.
