He warned bootleggers rely on bribery and called for more judges and funding as he travels along the South Atlantic coast.
A fire at the Salvation Army Maternity Hospital in New Jersey drove sixteen mothers and their infants to escape via third floor windows onto a narrow ledge. Firemen and hospital staff carried the women and babies down ladders, all safely without injuries, as bystanders watched anxiously.
One hundred thirty Wisconsin doctors mainly in Milwaukee Racine and Kenosha face revocation hearings in January and February for potential loss of prescribing permits. If revoked these doctors would reduce prescribed liquor by about 150000 pints compared with 1945, with many permits held by retired or non practicing physicians and hospital interns.
James Kelly and Urast Dagan of Shawano pleaded guilty to short-changing Jingo Neerenberg at the Dew Drop Inn on Lower Talla road. They were each fined $26 and costs in Justice Harry Wolters court after authorities described a 19.80 gain from a 20 cent deduction in the transaction. They were ordered to leave the county. The suspects arrived in a Chevrolet touring car with an Illinois license.
The home of Theodore Sprenger at 1064 Swift Avenue was threatened by fire Saturday afternoon. The blaze started in the basement from heating lubricating oil on an open gas plate and was extinguished by the fire department. Damage amounted to $75 to the building and to contents.
The Wisconsin Board of Regents majority labels the act rejecting all corporate gifts a mistake. Seven of ten alumni committee members sign the report urging the university to invite future gifts while seeking broader consultation with the board.
William Blust 65 died of a heart stroke while working at the Blust and Chavennet meat market in Sheboygan Falls. He had run the market at 614 Broadway with Jacob Blust for 42 years and was a respected local businessman and sportsman. Funeral at home on Broadway with burial in Sheboygan Falls Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Anna and two daughters, with several siblings.
