Frigid weather spreads from coast to coast with record lows in Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan. Chicago sees a deadly cold spell with several deaths while Milwaukee and nearby counties report additional fatalities and weather delays.
Berlin reports the Dutch government has requested clemency for Marinus Van der Weg a young Dutch brick mason who attempted to set fire to the Reichstag and whose death sentence was under review by German authorities. The Dutch side gave no clear indication of the outcome.
Police report details two fur coats stolen from the H. C. Prange store over the weekend. A leopard skin coat with tan lining and tailored collar valued at 123.75 and a Hudson seal brown-ermine combo coat valued at 176. Both coats were size 18 and one had a black silk lining.
Madison leaders order immediate reduction of CWA workers by removing chiselers within the federal quota. Regional and county directors will apply discretion. Cold weather will not cut payroll this week as Christmas recess boosts building work. Most workers earn about $1.20 per hour. A 1,400 mile air dash from Houston to Baltimore carried five month old Sue Trammell to Johns Hopkins for brain surgery evaluation by Dr. Walter E. Dandy. Pilot James R. Wedell and a Houston family accompanied the child through ice winds and snow to Logan Field, where she reached Johns Hopkins for preliminary neuro-surgery assessment by Dr. Paul A. Kunkel. The baby was diagnosed with hydrocephalus and may undergo surgery pending Dandy’s exam later today.
The Sheboygan Emergency Relief Fund rose to over $9,000 with a $600 donation from the Sheboygan Clearing House association and a $61 addition by Citizens State Bank employees. With many local gifts cataloged, the drive aims for $10,000 as winter hardship looms. organizers urge readers to donate today to help neighbors in need. The list includes Kohler Co and other businesses, public schools, and individual supporters.
Two youthful state prisoners with good behavior records overpowered a guard and escaped in his automobile during a cross country trip. They are believed to be headed away from Fond du Lac county with a third prisoner who stayed behind. The guard Elmer Lickel and Frank Johnson were forced from the car near Menomonee Falls after a lengthy drive. Police are alert as Kans and Dillinger, both wearing state prison uniforms and sheepskin coats, are pursued.

Governor A G Schmedeman extends the special session call to amend state banking laws to help Wisconsin banks qualify for the federal deposit insurance effective January 1 and allow the banking department to release deposits under the deferred payment plan. The proclamation will be read in both houses when they reconvene to pass a state equalization regulation and taxation measure.
