In the Cardinal mine of Fairview Mining near Nederland two miners died and two more were in critical condition with sixteen others burned or affected by gas after a fire. The last of twenty trapped miners were brought to the surface at 12 30 a m. Rescuer Prentice Norris, injured by a live wire, started the ventilating fan after two failed attempts. He was saved by fellow miners who entered the shaft once the fan operated amid a blizzard of smoke and debris.
United Press reports indictments against 60 business men union workers and gangsters in Chicago. Police say a death blow is near against the gang blamed for more than 100 bombing outrages in the city over the past year. Eight executives of the ratall cleaners and dyers association are named including Hirshie Miller and F A Avery. Indictments cover bombing and conspiracy with businessmen accused of employing blind bombers to wreck rivals’ shops.
The Wisconsin Telephone company rate hearing before the Wisconsin Railroad Commission was rescheduled from December 9 to December 15 at 10 a.m. The hearing will be held at the courthouse in Sheboygan.
United Press staff correspondent reports Assistant Secretary Andrews pledging that the liquor law crackdown has only begun and will expand nationwide. He says the policy targets bootlegger sources and big syndicates, with forthcoming raids in other cities as dry detectives pursue War conspiracy cases.
A damaging storm swept five Kentucky counties Union Caldwell Lyon Marshall and Calloway causing 150000 in property loss. In Sturgis near here William Griges was fatally injured on a nearby farm while Oliver West age 70 and his wife Mary 65 died when their home collapsed in Hadlin Marshall County.
At the Sheboygan County Agricultural association annual meeting in Plymouth the financial report showed improvements, debt retirement, and planned grounds changes. Dr H A Arpke elected first vice president. Tyacanter and other officers reappointed. a wide slate of honorary vice presidents named. discussions urged better water supply and refined carnival features for public satisfaction.
Ben Bogard, one of three jail escapees from Ashland, was captured today by Sheriff Mimer Sanders and five deputies after a high speed pursuit. Bogard was shot four times in the back during the chase and surrendered after leaping from a car and fleeing on foot. The capture ended a raid tied to a robbery case linked to Dakota, Iowa, with accomplices Howard and George Bohn and an Indian youth Boyer.
The Nariford Courant reports Madame Nazimova’s claimed marriage to Bryant and denies her as yet wed to Rugdlin. Bryant, once her leading man, was said to be her alleged husband for years. Nazimova seeks a divorce decree to marry Bryant. news notes Bryant and May Olhooley’s reported marriage.
United Press reports Milwaukee police served twelve more roadhouse owners with notices to appear in federal court to defend injunction actions under the federal prohibition act. Ten are in Kenonna county and two in Milwaukee county. The actions aim to curb illegal liquor flow and holiday celebrations. More notices expected within two weeks as federal agents intensify the crackdown ahead of New Year parties.
House Republican leaders carried out disciplinary action by removing Wisconsin lawmakers Nelson and Frear from major committee posts. Nelson was removed from the rules committee and Frear from the Ways and Means committee. The move hugs the insurgents and shapes future committee assignments as the party plans further discipline next week.
An American steamship collided with the British steamer Anhton in the Beheldt today. The captain, pilot, and three crew of the Anhton are missing. four were rescued.
