Governor Morgan asked the War Department for 1000 federal troops to halt 5000 armed coal miners gathering at Marmet and marching toward Mingo and Logan counties. Miners are described as an army with rifles, revolvers and machine guns. stores are looted, officers disarmed, trains commandeered, and martial law feared.
About four thousand miners arrived in Boone County with more believed en route through to Logan. Reports say several miners were killed or wounded accidentally by their guards during the transit.
Washington Wainwright signals presidential support for martial law amid threats in Mingo County. Plans center on federal troops and rapid deployment of two Army officers by air to the area for investigation. Brig. Gen. Holtz and Col. Ford ordered to proceed at once with Maj. Russell assessing the region.

A Canadian car from Port Arthur Ontario arrives in Sheboygan with A B Bennett and family at C Vandree’s 323 Eris avenue. Returning from Syracuse the vehicle has logged 3500 miles on the same east west route via Spooner Chippewa Falls Wausau New London and back Port Arthur lies 218 miles north of Duluth. Mr Bennett proudly notes the journey continues on Port Arthur as well.
The Central Labor Council announces plans for Labor Day events on September 6 led by parade chair William Biverse. A mammoth parade will involve all local labor locals, followed by a family picnic at Born's Park and an evening dance at Eagles Hall.
The parade will assemble at the post office on Jefferson avenue and N eighth street and begin at 12 30 o'clock in the afternoon. Charles Zabel is named Marshal of the Day with C E Schirmeister and Otto Marquardt as assistants. The marshal crew promises no delay at start and urges punctual union participants. The common council members will attend in a body and line up behind the organizers.

Special to The Presa Madison Wis the question of Judge John Meyers authority in Sheboygan municipal court arises after dismissal of liquor cases. Some insist the district Milwaukee county court holds jurisdiction in prohibition matters and Meyer may have acted without valid power. If jurisdiction is affirmed the dismissals stand and warrants failed. if not the court could be impeached.
Life boats from the Canadian Importer head for land as the ship sinks southwest of the Columbia River. The Canadian government vessel left Vancouver August 13 for Adelaide via Auckland Sydney and Melbourne. Cordova stood by and rescued several survivors while one lifeboat remained missing.
Berlin reports that the German American peace treaty was signed at 5 oclock, ending the war since April 6 1917. Ellis Dresel signed for the United States and German interests, with terms reportedly aligning with the Knox Porter resolution. The document will be sent to the Reichstag and the U S Senate for ratification.
The eleventh case against George Gebel, a Sheboygan saloonkeeper, was dismissed by Judge John C. Meyer on DA Charles Voigt's motion. Gebel, accused of possessing intoxicants at a soft drink establishment, was found not provable due to a faulty complaint under a Class B permit. Two cases remain, Goodstein and Schwartz, with trial dates August 29 and 30.
A public meeting of property owners on N Sixth Street between Pennsylvania and Michigan Avenues and Michigan Avenue between Eighth and Fourth Streets is called for 7:30 PM by Alderman Benfey, judiciary committee chair. Norman Walker the sole American survivor from the ZR-2 disaster told the Associated Press at Howden England of the wreck that killed the entire American crew. He described the crash after a fog blocked landings and the dirigible split in half above the Humber with flames sweeping the forward section. The air ministry identified three officers killed in the explosion including Lieut Marcus Masterly Lieut Charles G Little and Lieut Montague.
United Press reports from Hull describe the ZR-27 airship disaster as it exploded and plunged into the Humber River. Flight Lieutenant Wann, commander, recalls a five second catastrophe and his narrow escape amid flames. Norman C. Walker, the only American survivor, relays grim details.
