More than 300000 was collected in September during the first ten days of the new tax on cigarets papers and tubes. Chief John W. Roach reported to State Treasurer John M. Smith that 286243 had been received by Friday, with an unofficial estimate of about 15000 more on Saturday. The revenue comes from daily taxes and a floor tax on retailers’ stock as of September 19. Retailers failing to report inventory by October 1 face a 15 percent penalty. Taxes were collected from wholesalers and manufacturers, with 22 meters in use and 40 more to be sold. State officials praised cooperation in implementing the tobacco tax law.
