On January 1, 1867 the Milwaukee Sentinel will add two reading columns increasing capacity. The paper cites higher costs for paper and type and seeks new subscribers to offset the added expense. It requests support from Sentinel friends in the West to sustain the volume.
A detailed account recalls the fatal duel between Edmund Lefebre and Charles Janin. The two men, both of high standing, met at a remote spot near the fortifications after a dispute over Lefebre's wife. Double barreled guns were used at thirty paces, with Lefebre mortally wounded and Janin also dying twelve hours later. Lefebre, a Montreal native, leaves a wife and two children. Janin, born in France, had dependents as well. The seconds failed to avert the confrontation, and both families face distress.
A fragment from a Tennessee story recalls McNairy County’s early days and Bill Simpson recounting a fake court scene. His tale about a hog, a shoot, and a persimmon tree sets in a mock court where twelve jurors and finely dressed men convene, ending in a tirade and beating. Also noted are a Richmond shoemaker making an oversized pair and a Bostonian model for typesetting machines.
A Washington Republican excerpt recounts South Carolinians blaming General Sherman’s army for wartime losses and hard times. Citizens describe looted silver, wine, a hospital in a former church, burned pews, and a cherished carriage taken for bounty. Personal anecdotes illustrate lingering resentment in the postwar era.
Mrs Swentz, once known as Dobbs, shot John Swentz during a ball at a Hoboken firemen's bail, claiming he seduced and deserted her after marriage. She said she acted after discovering him with a young woman and planned vengeance. A ball was extracted from his shoulder. the second lodged near his back.
A 19th century editorial argues American women are becoming more handsome and healthier. It claims rising generations outdoors, exercise, and brisk activity improve condition and appearance, noting differences between classes and centering on urban centers as developments progress.
In winter quarters at Centreville a Confederate drum was mistaken for a rebel driver. The quick temper of Colonel Seypiour of the 6th Louisiana led him to punish Fred the German orderly before learning the truth. The colonel apologized and invited the drummer to his tent, where the misidentified man explained the error, ending the incident with goodwill and laughter. A separate note mentions a new grain separator and other assorted items and curiosities.
