The narrative follows a thirty year old Californian prospector who left his eastern home after misfortune. He built a cabin near the American River, endured a deep snowdrift and isolation around Castle Peak in 1862 63, heard of mineral ledges near Meadow Lake, and then located the Excelsior and Great Eastern ledges along with several other mines. If productive, he could become a millionaire. A second item describes a cheap method to tan leather using turpentine and oil, with a quick one day process for hides and morocco, including a description of the vat and steps from tanning to finishing.
A suspect, Lewis Nanson & Co. of St Louis, forged drafts totaling about 3000 dollars drawn on a Second National Bank. Wicks of Cincinnati reported attempts to pay with a forged check while in Louisville. The man fled to Louisville, then was captured and held. multiple forgeries across cities are cited.
