The American Watch Company of Waltham, Massachusetts began operations in 1880. Its factory covers four acres, costs exceed a million dollars, and employs over 700 workers. It makes 75,000 watches annually and sells at least half of all gold watches in the United States. European watches are largely handmade, leading to variability and lower timekeeping accuracy compared with the American output.
