Shafter City Council Votes On Police Hiring And Plans
The Shafter City Council approved adding a 12th police officer to cover graveyard shifts after an assault on Officer Mary Beechie. They also moved to have the city manager pursue an environmental impact report under AB 939 and consider annexation tax exchanges, volunteer worker benefits, Downtown Park notice of completion, and financing for six police vehicles.

County to hear grant plans at Shafter meeting
Kern County announces a Community Development Block Grant information session October 3 at Shafter Veteran's Hall 309 California Ave. Residents, business people and neighborhood service agencies can learn how about 3.5 million dollars in CDBG funds may be spent. The department will report on past allocations and eligible uses include housing upgrades, owner and renter occupied housing, neighborhood improvements such as drains parks and water systems, and job opportunities for lower income residents.

Kern County Ag Chemical Collection Nets 60 Tons
More than 60 tons of excess and outdated farm chemicals were gathered in Kern County during a two day collection program. Sponsored by Kern County, the Kern County Farm Bureau and Laidlaw Environmental Services, the effort drew nearly 80 deliveries totaling about 125000 pounds to the Laidlaw facility near Buttonwillow. Growers transported material to facilities for environmentally sound disposal with 80 to 90 percent savings noted on a one time basis.

Wildwood Farmers Club born from lamb exhibit program
Twenty three years ago Diane In travia started teaching special education at Wildwood School near Buttonwillow. A dog Snoopy arrived and Lambs were born with help from Lost Hills and Brent Davey family. The Kern County Fair featured a Special Market Class for handicapped exhibitors and two lambs were shown for Brent Davey and Rocky Valencia. The Wildwood Farmers Club grew with support from Buttonwillow Lions Club Wasco buyers and Wasco community volunteers.
