Kern County potato growers are urged to file 1943 allotment intentions by October 10 1942. The program will largely resemble 1942 with possible slight increases and shifts to personal basis allotments based on past production and land availability.
Ten thousand acres of sandy loam land in Shatter Wasco and Arvin Kern county will be planted to guayule shrub this fall under U S Forest Service direction on Government leased land. Farm Adviser Lindsay said Boyd Fisher leads Kern plantings with harvest in three years and 600 acres set for nursery. Officials estimate 180000 acres nationwide to yield thousands of tons of rubber by 1944 with farmers invited to lease land through Fisher via the Farm Adviser's Office.
A M Scott former employee of San Joaquin Cotton Oil and D O Moore Gin Wing in Rosedale and Shafter died in Los Angeles after a three month illness from an injury. He is survived by his widow Edna L Scott and two daughters Roberta Scott and Mrs Arnold Sumner. Funeral services were held yesterday in Los Angeles.
Shafter Wasco Ginning Company purchases 40 acre parcel from Mr and Mrs Frank M Adams at an approximate cost.
Scrappers chairman Ted Vignolo of the Shafter Salvage for Victory thanks volunteers and equipment givers for the first big Shafter Scrap drive. He notes some were missed and asks uncalled–on collectors to phone their names to the General Petroleum office on Central Avenue. Proceeds benefit local war activities.
A newsreel sequence follows a brother’s voyage from Gibraltar to Malta and returns ashore at Malta showing the route and scenes aboard the ship and on the dock.
Shafter residents deliver about 150 tons of scrap metal to the Salvage for Victory pile in a Rotary contest led by Orv Mettler who won immunity from club fines for one month. Gordon Haycock, Phil Channeson and others contributed large amounts as volunteers organized by Ted Virnolo with help from Minter Field soldiers, county trucks, and local businesses.
Camp Roberts dispatch recounts humorous Army rookie tales. A trainee armed for kitchen police confronts Army terms, while another packs a light field kit. A guard duty joke ends with bury the Jap. The account pins the tale to Co. A 83rd Inf Tag Bn, river bottom hunt, and night brush as the incident unfolds.
In Shafter a scrap drive produced a mix of success and mishap as two Pete Wall tires were found among the salvage. A truck and a donated safe toppled into a cesspool pit at the C. W. Cafe on Central Avenue, prompting a rescue by a second truck with a hoist. Report lost tires to the salvage committee at 751. The incident gave a near tragic but comic moment to the collection effort.
Lt. Cok L. W. Proper announces two safety committees at Minter Field to meet weekly. Each group will include six instructors and review cadet and instructor safety suggestions with boxes installed for student pilot input.
Former Shafter Press editor Bill Rodgers spent the weekend at Camp Roberts. He completed 13 weeks of intensive training and will advance to Officers' Training Camp in Georgia. A mock drill featured a field pack incident as a soldier warned a fellow recruit.
The 1943 Shafter High School annual staff met to map the yearbook project. Members include Mirian Klaudt as editor, Elsie Mottler assistant editor, and Harold Schnaidt business manager.
Shafter Kiwanis Club launches a membership drive to add at least ten members after a conference with District Lieutenant Governor Ben Pratt. Eleven current members remain as enlistments in the Army and Navy have depleted ranks. Herb Schirmer serves as delegate to the Los Angeles convention with speakers including Dr. Robert Gordon Sproul and Verne Orr.
At Shafter High School meetings, class officers for the new year were elected. Marie Evans is press secretary and vice president, Mamie Kroeker secretary, Lecia Reimer social chairman. Junior officers include Dudley Steele president, James Son vice president, Rachel Ray secretary. Joe Wiebe president, Bob Jinzen vice president, Mary Led secretary, Roxy Rexius yell leader. Freshmen officers are Allen Stahl president, William Evans vice president, Freda Holsinbeck secretary. Positions left open will be filled at the next meetings. Dick Leonards named editor of the Commander weekly newspaper.
The Woman's Ambulance Corps relocated to 332 Central Avenue near Diane's Beauty Parlor. The office will operate in shifts during the day. New members Betty Reily and Geraldine Jaeger joined this week. The corps recently completed a rapid transport run last Friday using Central Market facilities.
A hen owned by Earl Wroten reportedly lays two eggs daily, described as defying nature. The bird, praised for patriotism, supposedly contributes a quota of eggs to feed America and support the war effort.
Funeral services for Abraham Strauss a 69 year old Shafter farmer and church leader were held Tuesday from the Mennonite Brethren church. Burial was in Shafter cemetery. He died last Friday and was a Minnesota native who had lived in Shafter 20 years. Survived by his widow Anna and two sons Dave and Albert and four grandchildren Robert Deanna Jeen and Jerry Joan Strauss.
The World War I cannon in front of the American Legion hall will be melted into scrap for a salvage drive. The plan was approved at the Leslie L. Robinson Post meeting held Monday night. A parade with high school bands is planned for the ceremony tomorrow. New Legion officers were installed: W H Hitchcock commander, Joe Henderson first vice commander, Clyde Bell second vice commander, Jack Janzen sergeant at arms, Glenn C Nay adjutant.
J. M. Gipson of Shafter returned from Combet Ww to surprise his twin sister Mrs. Florrie Pruett. She initially failed to recognize him, needing time to be convinced of their kinship.
The Northern Selective lists nine recipients this week including William Crook Richardson and Joseph Hilton. California redwood shows continued growth in production and sales alongside other Pacific coast timber species.
Labor demand in the San Joaquin valley remains high with only 250 Mexican workers sought. Irvine S. Terrell, chairman of the San Joaquin division War Time Manpower, urged Kern County farmers to list needs. Local attendees included U.S. Forest Service official Boyd Fisher and Wasco’s C R Wedel along with Shafter’s A R Duehren and McFarland’s Bill Bowen. Rotarians from Delano and Bakersfield were present, and Jo Metlers will hold the Immunity Badge for two weeks for large scrap drive contributions.

The Auxiliary will meet every Thursday from 2 to 4 p m at a Homes Community location to discuss activities and plan events for members.
Mrs William Fey, an Assembly woman elected president in 1915 16, fled from Shatter with her husband Mr Fay after living there for years before moving to San Diego.
Among Shafter high school graduates now attending University of Redlands are Richard Becker, Bob Curtis, Kathleen Janzen and Louise Livers.
Neuman shot a buck in the Greenhorn district about 9 a m on opening day. He was accompanied by Mrs Neuman and arrived back in Shafter by 3 p m.
