Four communities contest Shafter fair booth honors at Kern County Fair
Arvin faces four challengers from Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Wasco Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and Delano District Chamber of Commerce in the booth decorator division. Arvin Chamber won last year’s top special feature exhibit and the sweepstakes trophy with a $750 prize. Premiums run 300 to 200, with booths set in Albert Goode Auditorium. Industry groups Kern-Tulare Beekeepers and Kern County Pomona Grange 26 join in organizational displays, while Peter Gilli Trophy goes to the best overall lighting attractiveness and ingenuity.

Trinity Lutheran Church steak barbecue set for October 1
Trinity Lutheran Church rescheduled its steak barbecue from July to Sunday October 1. Reverend Lawrence Anderson says a $5 donation buys steak salad baked potato and rolls. The event runs 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Barker Park North Shelter Wasco, marking the churchs second annual barbecue.

AARP class in Shafter postponed due to low interest
The American Association of Retired Persons chapter at 2809 Shafter postponed a defensive driving class planned with National Safety Council backing after only about 12 members indicated interest. The course needs 25 participants. non members may join, with next meeting in November to try to boost sign ups.
