Governor Reagan signed AB 1441 to amend California Agricultural Code section requiring complete use of pesticides. The bill adds structural pest control operators to exemptions, allowing repackaging into usable amounts and reducing costs and health risks for consumers.
Kern County construction activity rose in August with total building permits reaching 4 4 million 479 625, up from last year 4 009 024. Eight month total 34 267 234 exceeds 1967 pace and new dwellings dominate value though August dwelling permits fell short of last year. Arvin California City and Ridgecrest posted gains, Bryan Coleman forecasts year total well above 41 206 175.
Motorists are cautioned that this month and next are critical for deer on California highways. The DFG and Highway Division report September and October last year accounted for about a quarter of deer road kills, with estimated yearly deer fatalities around 20,000 from vehicles. Drivers should reduce speed and drive carefully in areas marked Deer Area or Deer Crossing, especially at night on freeways and high speed highways.
The City of Shafter passes Ordinance No. 1 approving the annexation of Potter Tract, uninhabited territory in Kern County, to Shafter. The ordinance directs filing with the Secretary of State and publication of final passage in Shafter Press. Also notices of trustee sale and dissolution of Custom King Harvesting partnership are published with relevant dates.
City creates a Recreation Department to provide year round public recreation for all ages within the Shafter area. The Director of Recreation heads the department and is appointed by the Council on Recreation Commission recommendation. The ordinance sets a six member Recreation Commission from local districts to oversee programs, budgets, and public relations. The measure takes effect 30 days after passage and will be published with council votes.
