The Shafter city council held a special meeting to discuss increasing water and refuse rates set since 2000. A public workshop will explain the changes, effective January 1 2010, with a 12.6 percent initial rise and phased 2.8 percent decreases over five years.
The Minter Field Air Museum in Shafter unveils a new hangar with a 10 a.m. ceremony on Sept. 26 2009 at the Shafter Airport. Commemorative Air Force's B 17 Bomber Sentimental Journey will be on site from Sept. 25 for rides through Sept. 26. Alejandra Alvarez-Pantoja, 22, died when her 2003 Honda Accord failed to stop at a sign at Magnolia Avenue and Lerdo Highway. A 2001 Ford F-250 eastbound broadsided her, overturning and tearing the Honda apart. Clayton McKenzie and Anna Olvera, wearing seatbelts, had injuries. Alcohol involvement unknown.
