The Kiwanis club of Shafter announces its second annual Pancake Breakfast led by Ross Harrington with proceeds supporting Boy Scout Campfire and Halloween activities and a yearly scholarship. About 1000 attendees including families are expected as the event kicks off National Kids Week with music from the high school Pep Band and a local duet.

The San Joaquin valley cotton harvest is set to begin October 1 with peak activity around October 15. Kern county growers report the 1956 crop is several days early and expect yields at least equal to 1965. First bales were ginned at Shafter and Semitro district handpicking has begun in places.

First pipelines sunk for Shafter-Wasco irrigation project
