Local Hispanic college bound students will be recognized at Serenata 2007, the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation scholarship awards banquet. Nine students receive scholarships. Longtime Shafter Area Resident Joe Duke Dies at 75
Joe Carl Duke 75 of Shafter died August 30 2007 in Bakersfield after a life in Wasco and Shafter California. He was born March 29 1932 in Stratford Oklahoma to Winson and Dona Duke. He married Joy Adams June 9 1954 and lived in Wasco before moving to Shafter in 1971. He managed maintenance for Wasco Elementary School District for 36 and a half years and enjoyed restoring old cars and tractors. He is survived by his wife Joy, daughters Linda and Karen, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A graveside service was held September 4 2007 at Shafter Memorial Park. He was a member of Cornerstone Church of Rosedale. Donations may be made to Cornerstone Church Building Fund.
