The Kern County Economic Opportunity Corporation will distribute free commodities on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at 131 East Street Buttonwillow for qualified recipients. The Downtown Parking and Improvement District partners with Pepsi Cola for a Child ID Program on September 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parents bring children to James and Central Ave for fingerprinting and video recording. The city council awarded the Return to Custody street project to Halopoff and Son Inc for 143344 dollars. Work begins Oct 4 and lasts about 15 working days, widening Beech street and Los Angeles street and building 767 feet of East Ash. Halopoff was the lowest of three bids.

July total permits for Shafter reached 141,628 with one new manufactured home for 30000, a 83628 remodeling job, and two commercial remodels for 28000. August total was 84235 including one new residence 53758 and remodels 30226 plus 250 for one commercial remodel.

Shafter officer assaulted during early morning park incident
Shafter police investigate an assault on Officer Mary Beechie who was struck in the forehead by a blunt object near the concession stand in the park area around 5 20 a.m. on September 5. Beechie received minor head injuries, was treated and released, and police seek tips at 746 6341.

D A R E program planned for Richland Lerdo schools
