Man Faces Mental Health Care After Jail Suicide Attempts
A Bakersfield man in the Shafter city jail attempted suicide twice Monday night, first by hanging then by drowning in a washbasin. Patrolman Robert Nixon found him during routine checks. the improvised rope broke. He is now under observation in Kern General Hospital's psychiatric ward.

Olga Irene Smith, 43, of North Shafter, is jailed on murder charges after a coroner’s jury ruled her husband Charles Smith’s death a homicide. The preliminary hearing is set for next Wednesday before Judge Frank Noriega.
