Energetic Shafter Pioneer Oscar Wiedmann Tells His Early Years
Oscar Wiedmann, a Shafter pioneer, recalls clearing sagebrush on his Iry Avenue ranch in 1915 with homemade energy solutions. He built a half finished house after moving from Los Angeles area, dug wells, and powered a ranch with a tripod pump and animal teams. He later worked as a carpenter on Kern County structures and helped build gymnasiums, dairies, and cow barns while recounting droughts, floods, and encounters with wildlife.
