Richland Buttonwillow and Shafter reopen with Richland predicting 1644 students and a large kindergarten. Districts plan schedule changes, budget control, and new labs for remedial work and language arts, with a bilingual teacher per grade and refined staffing.
The Shafter City Council releases a position statement signed by Elmer Unruh Councilman Little Jacobsen Wise, with Loyd Link not signing. It calls for restraint, civil rights respect, and lawful enforcement by the Shafter Police Department while opposing unlawful methods amid a grand jury inquiry and ongoing controversy surrounding Chief Gene Ka plan. It notes past criticisms, asserts no substantiated charges justify claims, and hopes the grand jury will restore orderly city administration.
The Secret Witness program offers 750 dollars for tips leading to arrests in three Shafter break ins last week. Masco Shed on Walker Street held tools valued over 2000 dollars after a Tuesday burglary. Colvard's Furniture Store lost TVs worth over 5000 dollars via a roof entry. A separate midnight incident involved two men with 14 tractor tires at a Shafter trucking firm. no arrests. Authorities suspect a three-person team with a lookout and a truck driver, possible larger vehicle. Residents urged to report strange flatbed or enclosed vans and license numbers. Other rewards apply for two electric typewriters stolen at Shafter High School and Porsche damage at Sierra Vista Mobile Home Park. Call 746-4943.

A free Shafter Spirit bumper sticker with each purchase and a Friday 6 to 7 p.m. clown balloon distribution are planned plus all-day Saturday discounts.

Delano College classes in Shafter through Bakersfield College have no entry tests or tuition with offerings in business English child development fitness sociology Spanish and real estate basics.
