Field Day Sets Date to Explore Shafter Cotton Station Future

University of California held a Field Day on August 12 2010 to discuss the future of the Shafter Cotton Research Station. UC vacated the facility in April and the land remains owned by Kern County Land Company with a five year lease for part of the site to Kern County Extension and Farm Advisors. ARS will operate under a renewed lease with staffing needs and Homeland Security measures including a new fence and security checks. A second Field Day is planned for September 14 inviting community participation.

Mobile home fire destroys vacant residence in Kern County

On Sunday August 29 2010 at about 355 PM Kern County Fire Department responded to a mobile home fire at the 18000 block of Smith Lane. Ten firefighters arrived to find a single wide mobile home fully involved with adjacent structures threatened. High voltage lines hindered efforts as they burned and fell to the ground. The fire was knocked down in 15 minutes after which extensive overhaul followed. No one was inside the home and no injuries occurred. The mobile home was a total loss and one adjacent structure was slightly damaged. The cause is under investigation. KCFD urges working smoke alarms to provide early warning and notes smoke is a leading cause of fire deaths.
