Grandparents as primary caregivers rise in U.S. child care
A census based report highlights that about 20 percent of preschoolers are cared for mainly by grandparents. The piece notes racial patterns, the higher role of grandmothers among unemployed mothers and grandfathers when mothers work evenings, with child care costs up since 1985 and poverty-linked burdens. It also promotes the Shafter Kiwanis Harvest and Halloween Festival on Oct 31 with a 4:30 p.m. check-in and 5:30 p.m. parade, followed by Manner Park festivities.
