Proposals For Shafter Chamber Board Ballots

Eight names will appear on ballots for the Shafter Chamber of Commerce election with seven from the nominating committee and one from the floor. H W Pat Kelly chairs the drive to beautify Shafter as part of the campaign. A Blue and Gold Days promotion was proposed with a Shop Shafter First slogan under discussion by local businessmen.

Shafter District Camp Fire Board met with Shirley Christensen reporting on new groups and leaders. Mrs. Marge Sugden and Ann Clark from Bakersfield attend, as workshops in Bakersfield continue. Ballots flow to Truxtun Avenue tally site after 8 p.m. with Sigma Corporation testing the system and the state Election Commission optimistic about faster electronic counting statewide.

Permit Granted Council Vote Ends In Tie On Fenderson Hearing

The City Council deadlocked 2-2 on approving a conditional use permit for the Fendersons at 255 Cross Street to care for up to 24 children in their home. Councilmen Anderson and Grundy supported the permit while Mayor Gaede and Cass Garratz opposed after a two day reflection period. Some residents opposed the plan though supporters urged Christian care for developmentally challenged children. The City Attorney noted an injunction option if challenged in court.

Kern County Clerk Vera K. Gibson announced that using the Coleman Vote Tally System final returns for Kern County would be reported soon in California. She said the electronic system would process many votes by 2 a.m., with almost all Kern County issues settled unless races are extremely close.

Local cotton harvests run at peak activity with workers to November 15. Shafter Co-op Gin managers Gaede and Bert Ware report skip row planting causing more grass and weed issues, with about 6000 bales processed and two weeks of work ahead. They project a 12 percent acre reduction but stay cautiously optimistic for next year.
