Melt fat in a skillet and brown flour then add water to two cups. Stir in salt and cook until thickened. Mix in carrots onions and meat then heat. Add Tabasco and spoon into a two quart casserole. Top with mashed potatoes and bake about 15 minutes at 400 F. Yield six portions.
Kern County Parks and Recreation announces its first annual report covering 1953-54 after merging the two departments. The document details county parks facilities in 48 parks and 31 recreation organizations, budget figures, community services, and attendance across more than 80 centers, with lithograph plates illustrating 24 park and recreation subjects. The University of California Davis introduces a unique thermo-pulper in its food processing lab. Sherman J. Leonard explains the device, built by Rietz Engineering, to develop processing methods for tomato concentrate paste sauces and fruit products. The vacuum pulping reduces air, limiting chemical reactions that affect nourishment.
