Protestants Plan To Fight Council On Proposed Taxes

Protestants oppose a proposed use tax affecting liquor establishments and an amusement levy intended to raise revenue for city needs. The council approved the measures, drawing criticism from Ernie Panero of the Shafter Theaters. A Shafter Chamber committee, led by Harvey Gaede, Lee Thomas and Jack Fleming, will study the city finance and assess the feasibility of countywide assessments. Officials say extra revenue is needed for expansion and to fund police and fire protection, noting the 15 cent property tax cut has reduced city funds for the second year.
