Kaleidoscope a mobile drug counseling van operates Wednesdays 1 to 7 pm in Manuel Park serving Shafter Wasco Buttonwillow Taft and McFarland. Funded by federal state and Catholic Social Services expansion funds with plans to add staff and extend to Delano while continuing education and diversion services.
Shafter High School announces its 27th Back to School Night set for Tuesday October 21 at 6 30 p.m. in the cafeteria with pie and coffee, followed by a 7 to 8 p.m. Patrons business meeting and class visitations in assigned rooms.
The Shafter Kiwanis Club will stage its annual Halloween parade on Thursday October 30 instead of Halloween due to a conflict with the Shafter High School homecoming game. Prizes will be awarded in several age groups. Entry information is available from club members. youngsters meet at 6 p.m. in the Top's Market parking lot.
Shafter candidate Dennis Harrison champions senior citizen activities as strongly as youth programs in the proposed recreation district. He cites bus tours for older residents and sees the district as a coordinating force for activities. Harrison, a California transplant and educator, also serves on the Shafter Planning Commission while describing his limited sports participation.
Two Shafter drivers won first places in tractor pull classes at Kern County Fair. Woody Wilson took top in the 22,000 pound stock class and Elmer Rossi of Bakersfield finished just one inch behind for second. Jack Nikkel won the 9,000 pound stock class. Norman Lum competed in the 18,000 pound stock class and was eliminated after a gear failure.
