A major oil production test is being prepared at Shell's Stevens A-56 in the Ten Sections Field. The well has reached 8900 feet with 958 inch casing cemented to 7760 feet above an 8 1/4 inch bore. The top 100 feet of 1140 open hole shows gas and gravity oil, while the bottom 500 feet bears gray sand.

Mrs. C F Hoffman of Moorpark learned of the death of her father Phillip Critten while visiting Shafter with friends. The Ventura county pioneer, a longtime oil industry figure and citrus grower, died Sunday from a heart ailment at age 79.

New Pastor Called to Congregational Church
At a Tuesday meeting the pulpit committee of Shafter Union Congregational church chose Rev. Alfred Chandler of San Jose as pastor. He succeeds Dr. T. Hilton Radcliff who will devote time to Wasco. Chandler preached here last Sunday and will start his duties on Sunday October 26. Next Sunday October 18 the pulpit will be filled by J. H. Porterfield of the Shafter high school faculty.
