Funeral Rites Set for Rev William J Bestwater
Funeral services for the Rev William J Bestwater 90 of 333 Beech Ave Shafter are planned for Friday October 3 1969 at 10 a m at the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. He died Monday in a Shafter convalescent hospital. Burial will be at Shafter Memorial Park. He led the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church from 1931 to 1940 and was born in Russia July 26 1879. He came to the United States at age 14 and taught school in Mountain Lake Minnesota and North Dakota before entering the ministry. Continued on page 3

Attendance at the 1969 Kern County Fair totaled 268667, below the 1962 record but among the best in 44 years. Shafter residents contributed to the success with high turnout and their names appearing in premium lists, as Dennis Day headlined free entertainment and a large livestock sale highlighted the Saturday program. The grand champion steer from Kern County FFA sold for 225 per pound to Alpha Beta stores, while the reserve champion came from Bakersfield West High Junior Farmer.

John Caton of Shafter entered his 16 month old appaloosa in the Kern County Fair Bakersfield where the horse won first place after a second place last year. He also earned a third for his younger appaloosa.
