Ned Smith age 71 gains retirement from agricultural inspection and faces a new stretch of life. A Kern County veteran with deep roots in farming baseball and industry, he reflects on past roles and future plans while remaining versatile and connected to the community.
Lions Clubs organize a sportsmanship bell contest between Shafter and Wasco high schools. The bell will be awarded after the Shafter-Wasco game on November 20. Judges include Shafter figures Dr. Grant Jensen Police Chief John Reily Fred Mason and Wasco principal Lester Smith Police Chief Robert Oliver and Lion Paul Groves.

State Department of Agriculture granted an extension for the Early California Long White potato marketing order ballot as Kern County growers lag 65 percent of required support. Secretary manager Don Maupin of the Kern County Potato Growers Association urged both growers and handlers to vote, noting a non vote counts as a negative under the tallying method. The program aims to stabilize prices, improve quality, and promote the Long White variety through marketing and advertising efforts.
Shafter High School Generals prepared for a tougher schedule after a narrow win. The team planned a warm up game against Arvin Bears before big tests against Taft on Oct 9 and Tulare on Oct 16. The Colonels continued their 23 game win streak, with Rugged scrimmages to iron out kinks. Coach Dan Bledsoe relied on Carl Beach and John Palomo in key plays to sustain the powerful front wall.
The Sun Maid Raisin float featuring Shafter queen Mary Devincenzo won first place in the Kern County Fair kickoff parade in Bakersfield. Co stars included Marlene Enns and Zoe Ann Janzen with riders A W Eckmann and John Enns aboard. The float distributed 2000 miniature raisin cartons along the route.
The Shafter City Council set 7 p.m. October 13 for bid reception on the new City Hall to be built at Sunset and James. State aid via emergency legislation funds most of the project with a 20 year rental lease to cover debt. Architect Ernest J. McCoy estimates the cost at 55 600.
Shafter aims to add housing for new residents including Doug las Aircraft Co jet center workers at Shafter Minter Field. Merton Wiedmann of the chamber housing committee said the city planning commission will cooperate to encourage construction of housing units for prospective local citizens. New Shafter branch library hours announced by Librarian Mrs. Thomas Wedge. Library will open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m., with Friday nights and Sundays closed.
