The Wednesday Afternoon Club maps a full year of programs from October through May. Highlights include talks by Mrs. J C Channeson on Alaska and Mrs C P Morgen on an eastern trip, plus a Christmas party, book reviews, a garden program, and an arts and crafts talk.

Bazaar Monday at Mennonite Girls Sewing Circle

The Girls Sewing Circle of the Mennonite church will hold their annual bazaar Monday evening at the church hall. Proceeds support church programs and community relief efforts.

Shafter High Judging Teams Sweep Contests at Pomona Fair

Shafter high school judging team swept nearly all prizes at the Southern California Fair in Pomona. Wilmer Enns led in milk and butter scoring, Victor Voth topped in cheese, with Enns and Neuman placing high in overall individual scores. The team earned the sweepstakes trophy and four target cups, edging Tranquility and Santa Maria in the field.

Newlyweds Ardina Zeeb and Roland Mettler Wed in Salem

Ardina Zeeb daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Zeeb married Roland Mettler son of Mr and Mrs Fred W Mettler at Salem Reformed Church on Thursday September 17. Rev Bodenman officiated with music by the Mettler sisters. The couple planned to reside in Shafter California after a brief wedding reception for about 60 guests.

Miss Martha Loewen Weds John Enns In Mennonite Brethren Home

On a spacious lawn decorated for the occasion about 250 friends and relatives witnessed Miss Martha Loewen marry John Enns Sunday evening. Rev. Wm Bestwater officiated. The ceremony was at the Loewen home, parents of the bride. The Ennses are well known locals and the couple enjoys a wide circle of friends who wish them a long happy life.

Ladies Aid Meeting at Shafter Church With Rummage

The Ladies Aid of the Shafter Congregational Church will hold an all day meeting at the church starting 10 o clock on Thursday October 8th. A pot luck lunch will be served and all members and friends are invited. Bring scissors a thimble and any clothing for the rummage sale planned for the latter part of October.

The local post of the American Legion and the Auxiliary hold a joint installation next Monday evening at Legion hall. R. G. Poore of Dinuba 15th district commander will perform the Legion installation. A social hour follows the ceremonies for both groups.

Boy Recovers From Automobile Accident Injuries

According to last reports John nie Nikkel the son of Mr and Mrs George Nikkel is slowly recovering from injuries after being struck by an automobile Monday afternoon He suffered a compound fracture of the left leg and head injuries The accident is described as entirely unavoidable.

Harry Lutyens, director of state institutions, suspended Sonoma attendant George West for 30 days without pay on charges of kicking or striking 14 year old Joseph Sanchez and forcing the boy to clean his shoes.

Kern County to Hold Third Annual Cotton Picking Contest

The Kern County Farm Bureau sponsors the third annual cotton picking contest to be held Thursday October 15 in a field to be chosen in Bakersfield. Entrants must have picked at least 600 pounds in one day, with past records noted by Luis Cantanda and Ed Murdoch as organizers and judges allocating prizes and wages.

Fatal grade crossing crash claims Wasco AC worker wife

Mrs. James Williams 25 wife of a Wasco Creamery employee was killed when the Grand Canyon Limited northbound train struck her stalled car at a grade crossing a mile east of Wasco. The car was wrecked, the locomotive damaged, and the train needed a second engine to proceed. An inquest was held at Janzen Funeral Home in Shafer.

Cotton Thefts Land Two In County Jail

Isaiah Davis is serving a 60 day sentence in the county jail for cotton thefts. His alleged partner Jack Freeman awaits trial on two counts of petit theft. They are accused of stealing wagon loads of loose cotton from Buelah Hart in Fairfax road and Leonard Keele in Greenfield and of obtaining two checks for 66 dollars and 78 dollars.
