Safety tips to reduce Christmas tree fire hazards
The Shafter Fire Department urges practices to prevent tree fires. Keep the tree outdoors until installation, place it in a cool spot, avoid cotton or paper decorations, and use only intact electric lights. Do not leave lights on when away. Inspect needles and lights daily, remove the tree when needles brown. Do not exceed half hour lighting if kept up, keep lights away from flammable materials, and ensure exits are clear in public buildings.
