Shafter High School and local businesses team up for a Job Shadowing program. Students meet with a school-based coordinator and a business mentor for 2 to 3 hours to learn workplace basics, required skills, and career options, linking classroom lessons to real jobs. Mabel Lorine Ashmore 89 longtime Shafter resident died November 18 2002 after a chapel service conducted November 21 2002 at Peters Funeral Home with Elder Olaf Betat officiating. Interment followed at Shafter Memorial Park. She was born February 15 1913 in Bebe Arkansas to Arthur and Iva Munns and moved to Shafter during the Dust Bowl. She is survived by daughters Wanda Smith Escondido and Vanda Riggs Shafter. brother L D Jackson Van Nuys. sister Estelle. five grandchildren 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was a Seventh Day Adventist.

Historical Society marks depot and museum anniversaries
Shafter Historical Society celebrated the 85th anniversary of the depot construction and the 20th anniversary of its opening as a museum. President Helen Gaede led a unanimous director slate including Georgette Kadel and Roger Strader. Curator Stan Wilson shown depot history. Dr. Harold Freedman shared wartime memories. The museum opens first Saturday monthly 10 am to 2 pm. intern Tara Franz updated exhibits and research. Art Kadel stories published in a $5 booklet titled High Stepping Days to fund museum projects.
