Board expects to raise no more than $4500 this year as funds are allocated by directors at a future meeting. Original $6925 goal was to be shared by Boy Scouts Campfire Girls Henrietta Weill Child Guidance Clinic and YMCA.
Construction of Richland School’s new primary annex is set to start about December 1. Fred S. Macomber Co. of Los Angeles and Bakersfield, winner of the bid at $599,800, is expected to finish the job within working days, probably early in 1955. The project, financed by a $700,000 bond issue, is the area’s largest single construction. The low bid was $29,745 below estimates and $51,600 under the 10th bid. Subcontractors include Schneider Wykoff. the project adds 45,500 square feet, with 11,250 corridors and 17,800 classrooms. The kindergarten building covers 6,200 square feet.

The Wasco Tigers defeated Shafter 7 to 6 in a tense Sequoia League title clash at Wasco Stadium. San Joaquin Memorial High School from Fresno will defend the North Sequoia honors in Friday’s 2 p.m. game, while Wasco seeks the Valley mid-league crown. The night also saw Shafter win 7 to 0 over Wasco Kittens, and the 20 30 trophy along with the Lions Club sportsmanship bell moved to Wasco High, as Wasco leads the 10 year series four to two.
Dorothy Mayberry recalls two assailants, one in Air Force uniform, held her at gunpoint and bound her hands at Lee's Dining Room. The robbers looted about 81 dollars, escaped in a rear parked car, and an on duty officer Hubert Mayberry freed her after the incident. The civilan suspect questioned for a quarter change and the uniformed man lingered before the stick up.
Shafter Colonels notch their fourth straight win as Dick Nieto sweeps right end for the only score after a late drive. Billy Cummings added the extra point pass to secure the 7–0 victory over Wasco Kittens in a hard fought B squad clash.
Downtown merchants back a 28 foot evergreen at the Central avenue James street intersection. Tony Brown says businessmen contribute five dollars each to fund the fir tree display. Tree raising ceremonies are slated for Saturday December 5.
A joint effort in Shafter to teach proper bicycle safety and enforce cycling codes was outlined this week. Police Chief John Reily and Richland School officials including Fred Hasty and Roy Farrell will coordinate instruction and enforcement with parents notified of offenses and court fines possible for repeat violators.
Police seek a theft suspect who robbed Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Thomas at 326 East Marengo while their 18 month old son Garland Ray was buried. The loss was 26 dollars. Surviving relatives include two brothers J. W. Jr. and Keith, sister Joyce, and grandparents Mrs. Birdie Dean of Oklahoma and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thomas of Texas.
Clifton Clemens of Wasco told Shafter Chamber of Commerce members that finding supplemental water is the No. 1 project for the Kern County Board of Trade. He explained the board’s sponsoring of meetings on water and how the county is tying to the state water department.
Shafter Chamber of Commerce members reelected two holdover directors, Harlin P. Wilson and Robert Bann, in this week’s election. Secretary Ernie Hofman announced 67 ballots were returned with 466 votes cast. New directors named for the coming year include Bruce Crawford, Don Ruggenberg, Jack Fleming, Tony Brown, and Irvin E. Fike, with Lew Woodard remaining automatic president member of the board.
